More correctly said, these are my 3 favorite photography commentators. But that title would have been a little wordy. They can be found on YouTube and Instagram for your viewing pleasure. All bring something a little bit different to their presentations and offer unique styles. Therefore, a little difficult to rank them. So, I will list them in no particular order.
Nigel Danson.
I like his style because of the cinematic quality that he puts into every video. I don’t think that I have ever seen any shaky hand-held video while walking and talking, on his channel. He incorporates great drone footage and quality sound to make the B Roll a work of art. His commentary is geared toward accomplishing high-end photography but certainly can be appreciated by hobbyists at any level.
Chris Sale.
It would describe this channel as, “Watch Me Learn”. Chris quit his full-time job to become a professional landscape photographer. If you watch his work from the beginning, you can see the pitfalls and challenges of starting out. His style is quite low-key and matter-of-fact but that is something enjoyable and enhances the learning process for me. Chris also said that he had over 10,000 views on his first YouTube video. Not quite sure how to duplicate that feat and would like to hear any back story on that accomplishment.
James Popsys
I like James mostly because of his style. Not quite comic relief, but certainly a wry wit that comes across as very genuine. Perhaps not a lot of technical commentary on his videos but more like, “A Day in the Life” type of presentation. He incorporates many simple photography tips regarding equipment, composition, and workflow.
If there is one thing in common with all these chaps I would use the word, “Authentic”. You will not see a fast-talking salesman with quirky clickbait. There is typically some great cinematic video to introduce and enhance great photography and discussion.
By watching these gentlemen, I hope to eventually add some elements of style and presentation to my videos. In the short term, I will be working on my British accent while enjoying hot tea with my weekend viewing.
