Perhaps 10 years ago I wrote a short Kindle eBook just for the learning experience. It was not photography, but actually about my experience as a casino dealer in Las Vegas. But that is another story.
I decided to take another go at it after I saw a professional photographer publisher a short PDF file for sale on his own webpage. It was marketed as a "Zine" and contained 12 photos selling for about $4.00. Seemed like a zero-cost way at self-promotion and cross-marketing.
If anyone has tried publishing to Kindle, I would like to hear about your experiences. It is certainly all possible but quite a tedious learning curve. It took me about one weekend or 30 hours to get my first publication together. I found it not very intuitive at all.
Some of the issues;
You will need to use some combination of files to convert to the Amazon Kindle format. For example, write the text using MS Word, convert to PDF, convert to KPF, upload to Amazon. Once there you will need to navigate their standard design templates which only makes things more difficult. I actually found that creating my own cover page for example was easier to do for myself via desktop publishing software.
Formatting text and graphics are also difficult. The best strategy is to keep it simple. This is complicated by the fact that eBooks can be read on different platforms and will look somewhat different depending on the device being used.
Certainly not a Get Rich Quick scheme as your royalties could be as low as 35%. Also, not great for graphic intense publications like photography as Amazon may also charge you a premium when transferring eBooks of large file size.
All that said, I did manage to create 2 publications. One is an eBook and the other is Paperback. Hoping that my weekend of work has created a few templates for myself going forward and future efforts will take only a few hours.
As always, comments encouraged!
